CHAPTER SIX

BENJAMIN

The next morning, I’m up early and cast a longing look at Val’s closed bedroom door. The urge to slip into her room is strong. No less strong than it was last night when she crept upstairs after throwing me a look that I couldn’t quite decipher.

There’s a lot to be said for experience and due to my steadfast celibacy after falling for Val at eighteen, I simply don’t have it. I know how to deal with people. In my line of work, that’s a necessary skill.

But women? They are a mystery to me.

Shaking my head, I quietly leave the house and drive to work. The town is dark and silent this time of morning, and I don’t even turn on the radio as I go. Instead, I savor the peace and try to sort out my feelings.

Only what is there to really sort through?

Instead, that incredible moment Val touched and stroked me replays in my mind. Last night I was tempted to take myself in hand and release some of the tension and pent-up need. My hand even strayed down to my straining cock that throbbed and pulsed, tenting the sheet.

In the end, I didn’t. Simply because while that would relieve me of some sexual tension, it wouldn’t feel nearly as good as her hand upon me would.

At the pharmacy, I fill as many orders as I can to make Allen’s job easier. He’s doing me a huge favor filling in for me over the holidays and I don’t want to take advantage of his generosity any more than I already have. I hired him shortly before my brother-in-law’s cancer relapsed and Allen’s been an amazing coworker and friend.

Honestly, I don’t know how I would have been able to be there for Isaac and Dawn without Allen taking over as many hours and duties as he has without me shutting down the pharmacy or drastically reducing the hours. I won’t forget all his help and I hope his large Christmas bonus expresses my appreciation.

While working, I’m totally focused on the tasks at hand. Once in my truck again, I can't help thinking about Val.

Who am I kidding? My thoughts are always centered around her.

On the way home, I stop at Lucy’s café and pick up some hot chocolate and fresh cinnamon rolls. At the house, I find both girls up, but thankfully have caught them before they prepared breakfast. We all dig into the rolls and savor the hot chocolate.

“Oh, Ben, these are amazing. I don’t even want to think about all the calories in them,” Dawn moans around a bite of cinnamon roll.

Val’s eyes close at her first sip of hot chocolate. “Anything this good has to be terrible for you.”

I let out a huff. “It's the holidays. You can indulge.”

“That's easy for you to say,” my sister says, grabbing a second roll. “You're in your twenties with a good metabolism. Val and I are pushing forty.”

Val bumps her shoulder into Dawn’s. “Ouch. Slow down with that forty nonsense.
